What Does “Energy-Yielding Metabolism” Actually Mean—and Why Do Vitamins B6 & B12 Matter in Menopause?

“Contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism.”

You’ve probably seen that sentence written on the side of a vitamin bottle. It sounds impressive. It also sounds sufficiently scientific that most of us accept it, put the bottle back in the cupboard and carry on without having the faintest idea what it actually means.

And that matters, particularly during menopause.

Fatigue, tiredness and low energy are recognised experiences during the menopause transition. The British Menopause Society includes fatigue, tiredness and low energy among commonly reported menopausal symptoms, while sleep disturbance—which can itself leave women exhausted during the day—is remarkably common.

So when a menopause supplement contains vitamins B6 and B12 and talks about “energy-yielding metabolism,” an obvious question follows:

Are these vitamins actually giving you energy?

Not quite.

What they do is arguably more interesting. They help your body perform the biochemical processes required to extract and use the energy already contained within the food you eat.

And once you understand that distinction, the phrase “energy-yielding metabolism” starts making considerably more sense.

First: What Actually Is Energy-Yielding Metabolism?

Your body requires energy constantly—even when you appear to be doing absolutely nothing.

Your heart is contracting. Your brain is firing electrical signals. Your kidneys are filtering blood. Cells are repairing themselves. Muscles are maintaining posture. Your lungs are moving air in and out. Your body is regulating temperature, manufacturing proteins and transporting substances across cell membranes.

All of that requires energy. Food provides the raw material, principally through carbohydrates, fats and proteins. But eating a bowl of porridge doesn’t mean your cells can simply grab a piece of oat and turn it into movement.

The nutrients have to be digested, absorbed and then processed through a complicated series of biochemical reactions. Ultimately, much of the usable cellular energy produced through these processes is captured in a molecule called adenosine triphosphate, or ATP.

ATP is sometimes described as the body’s “energy currency.” That’s a simplification, but it’s a useful one. Your cells continually produce and consume ATP to power processes ranging from muscle contraction to nerve signalling.

Energy-yielding metabolism is essentially the collection of metabolic processes through which your body converts nutrients into usable energy.

And those processes require micronutrients to function normally. That’s where B vitamins come in.

B Vitamins Don’t Contain Energy

This distinction is worth making because supplement marketing can muddy the waters.

Calories provide energy. Vitamins do not. Vitamin B12 contains no meaningful caloric energy for your body to “burn,” and neither does vitamin B6. Taking a B-vitamin supplement therefore isn’t comparable to eating carbohydrates or fats.

Instead, think of B vitamins as members of the metabolic workforce that allows the machinery to operate normally. Numerous enzymes involved in metabolism depend upon vitamins or vitamin-derived compounds to perform their jobs. If the body is deficient in an essential nutrient, those processes can be impaired.

This is also why taking increasingly large amounts of a vitamin doesn’t necessarily create increasingly large amounts of energy. Once your nutritional requirements are being met, metabolism doesn’t simply accelerate because you keep supplying more of a particular vitamin.

That’s an important distinction between supporting normal energy metabolism and claiming that a vitamin is an energy stimulant.

So What Does Vitamin B6 Actually Do?

Vitamin B6 isn’t one single compound but a group of related compounds, with its biologically active coenzyme form known as pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP or P-5-P).

Its role in the body is surprisingly broad.

B6 participates in more than 100 enzyme reactions, many involving protein and amino-acid metabolism. It is also involved in glycogen metabolism—the process through which stored carbohydrate can be mobilised—and contributes to the production of haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying component of red blood cells.

The NHS describes vitamin B6 as helping the body use and store energy from protein and carbohydrates, while recognised health claims include its contribution to normal energy-yielding metabolism.

But B6 becomes particularly interesting in the context of menopause because its recognised physiological roles aren’t limited to energy metabolism.

Vitamin B6 also contributes to normal psychological function, normal functioning of the nervous system, regulation of hormonal activity, normal red blood cell formation, and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

That doesn’t mean B6 is a treatment for menopause symptoms. It isn’t.

But it explains why ensuring adequate B6 intake can make nutritional sense during a life stage in which energy, mood and tiredness may already feel less predictable.

And What About Vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12—also known as cobalamin—works differently but is equally fundamental.

B12 is required for normal red blood cell formation, neurological function and DNA synthesis. It also participates in reactions involved in the metabolism of nutrients.

The NHS describes B12 as helping the body release energy from food, while recognised health claims include its contribution to normal energy-yielding metabolism and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

There is another important piece of the energy puzzle here: oxygen.

Red blood cells transport oxygen around your body. Vitamin B12 is required for normal red blood cell production, and significant B12 deficiency can lead to megaloblastic anaemia, where abnormal red blood cells cannot function normally.

This is one reason tiredness and lack of energy are classic symptoms of B12 deficiency.

However, there’s an important caveat that responsible supplement companies should make much clearer: B12 supplementation doesn’t automatically give everybody more energy.

The NHS specifically notes that B12 supplementation improves tiredness and lack of energy when those symptoms are caused by low B12 levels. If you’re already obtaining enough B12, taking progressively larger doses isn’t a shortcut to limitless energy.

The benefit is in supporting normal physiology—not turning B12 into caffeine.

Why Does All of This Matter More During Menopause?

This is where the conversation becomes more nuanced.

Menopause doesn’t suddenly make your body incapable of producing energy, nor does falling oestrogen automatically create a B6 or B12 deficiency. What menopause can do, however, is create a perfect storm of circumstances that leave a woman feeling profoundly depleted.

Sleep may become fragmented by hot flushes or night sweats. Anxiety can make falling asleep more difficult. Changing body composition may affect how physically energetic you feel. Stress, caring responsibilities and work don’t disappear simply because perimenopause has arrived.

Heavy menstrual bleeding during perimenopause can also contribute to iron deficiency in some women, which has its own relationship with fatigue.

In other words, “menopause fatigue” often isn’t one thing. It’s a stack of things.

That distinction matters enormously when you’re deciding what to do about it.

The Menopause Fatigue Trap: Assuming Everything Is Hormonal

If you’ve reached your forties and suddenly feel exhausted, it can be tempting to attribute every low-energy day to menopause. Sometimes hormonal changes are part of the picture. But persistent fatigue deserves more curiosity than that.

Iron deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, folate deficiency, thyroid disorders, sleep apnoea, chronic insomnia, depression, certain medications and other health conditions can all present with tiredness.

And some of these become especially relevant in midlife.

For example, women experiencing heavier or prolonged periods during perimenopause may be vulnerable to iron deficiency. Meanwhile, B12 deficiency can cause not only tiredness but neurological symptoms such as pins and needles, cognitive changes and problems with balance if it becomes significant.

So before buying several different vitamins for menopause fatigue, ask a more useful question:

What might be driving my fatigue?

That question gets you much closer to something you can actually address.

Are You Getting Enough B6 and B12?

For many women eating a varied diet, adequate intake is achievable through food.

Vitamin B6 is found in foods including poultry, fish, pork, oats, bananas, peanuts and fortified cereals. The NHS states that women aged 19–64 require around 1.2 mg per day.

Vitamin B12 is naturally found predominantly in animal-derived foods such as meat, fish, milk, cheese and eggs, as well as fortified foods. UK guidance states that adults require around 1.5 micrograms per day.

That makes B12 particularly worth considering for people following vegan diets, as plant foods don’t naturally provide reliable amounts unless fortified.

Absorption can also become an issue independently of dietary intake, and pernicious anaemia—an autoimmune condition affecting B12 absorption—is a common cause of B12 deficiency.

If deficiency is suspected, that’s something to investigate rather than simply guessing.

Where Does Feminapause Fit Into This?

And a supplement should never be used to disguise a deficiency or medical problem that needs proper assessment.

Instead, supplementation is best understood as one part of a broader approach to supporting the body through menopause.

What Supporting Your Energy During Menopause Actually Looks Like

There probably isn’t going to be one capsule, food or morning routine that suddenly makes menopause fatigue disappear.

A more useful approach is to look at your energy as a system.

If you’re waking six times every night, sleep needs attention. If your periods have become exceptionally heavy and you’re exhausted or breathless, ask whether your iron levels need checking. If you’ve removed animal products from your diet, think about B12. If you’re skipping meals because you’re trying to lose menopause weight, examine whether you’re actually giving your body enough fuel.

If you’ve gradually stopped exercising because you’re tired, remember that maintaining muscle and physical fitness can itself support everyday function and healthy ageing.

Then consider where nutrition and supplementation can fill genuine gaps or provide useful support.

That isn’t as exciting as being promised an “energy breakthrough.” But it is considerably more useful.

So, What Does “Normal Energy-Yielding Metabolism” Really Mean?

It means your body has an extraordinarily sophisticated system for turning the nutrients you eat into forms of energy your cells can actually use—and vitamins including B6 and B12 are part of the machinery that allows those processes to function normally.

It does not mean that B vitamins contain energy. It does not mean taking more will continually increase your energy.

And it does not mean every woman experiencing menopause fatigue has a vitamin deficiency.

What it does mean is that adequate nutrition still matters enormously during menopause, particularly when your sleep, mood, activity levels and everyday energy may already be under pressure.

Perhaps that’s the better way to think about menopause vitamins altogether: not as miracle ingredients designed to overpower your changing body, but as carefully chosen nutrients that help support the normal processes your body is already working incredibly hard to perform.

And sometimes, understanding what an ingredient actually does is much more valuable than another promise printed on the front of a bottle.
